What will the web look like in 2010? 2015?

Social media has been around for a while now, but with sites like MySpace and Facebook, we’ve seen a real increase in Web 2.0 in the past 18 months.

Which begs the question – what will the web look like in the next 5-10 years?

Now, think back 5 years.  What were you doing on the web?  Me, I was all about message boards and updating my sites on Geocities.  I think by that time it was Yahoo! Geocities.  But I couldn’t imagine seeing videos and other streaming media becoming a staple on many web pages.  Forms of blogging were around, Live Journal was the big one.  But the word “blog” certainly wasn’t a household name.

When I think about what’s sure to become big in the next 10 years, I automatically go to video.  Of course, video already plays a big role in Web 2.0.  How will we use it in Web 3.0?  Web 4.0?  What kinds of interactivity will we be looking at?

And with the potential for all this new media to develop – how will it influence SEO?

A Break from Blogging

Well, I never really professed that I was the best at keeping up with blogging, but I admit that 2007 hasn’t been the best year for keeping Lyndseo up-to-date. So what’s been happening?

In February, I accepted a position with WestJet , Canada’s leading low-cost airline. I was brought on to coordinate all the web analytics and SEO efforts, a job no one had done before.

Combined with jumping into the deep end of a very deep pool at WestJet, I began commuting from Winnipeg to Calgary, where WestJet’s offices are. For those not too familiar with Canadian geography, Calgary is 1,370km (850 miles) west of Winnipeg. Doesn’t make for too friendly of a daily commute, so I began living in Calgary during the week, and Winnipeg on the weekends. As fall approaches, my fiance and I are almost finished with our very slow and painful move to Alberta. I am here full time now, with Dave to follow after the September long weekend. He is the Web Programmer for Naylor Publications in Winnipeg, and he will continue his work in Calgary.

In June, I spoke on the SEO Don’t, Myths, and Scams panel at Search Engine Strategies Toronto. I feel it went well and am excited about my next speaking engagement – WebmasterWorld’s PubCon; located in Las Vegas from December 4-7.

So please keep tuned… as life starts to settle (or does it ever really?) I hope to keep this blog updated much more frequently.

The New Spam

I am currently in Dallas doing some training, and on my lunch break I decided to check out my Facebook profile and see what’s new.

Sitting in my “Requests” area are five group invitations… invitations to things like “if X many people join this group, I’ll do Y”.  It is a very definite reminder of spam emails like “if you don’t send this email to X many people, Y will happen!!”.

The worst part about this is that only friends can invite you, so these are the people that I know, or once knew.  In fact, mostly it’s people who I’m not really close to anymore.  I guess the people who I’m closest with know about my lack of patience with such types of spam.

So, look out Facebook users.  The next generation of spam – the “Social Spam” if you will – is upon us and growing.

SES New York

Well unfortunately, I am not headed to New York next week for the Search Engine Strategies conference. But that doesn’t mean I can’t share with you the party schedule!

Joe Morin, the official party coordinator for SES New York, has posted the party list on the Search Engine Watch forums. Click here to check it out: http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=16971

Long lost update

So I’ve let my blog go for a bit, and I can’t promise that you’ll be seeing regular updates, but I did feel I should share what I’ve been doing with my time.

I am back to the world of in-house SEO. About six weeks ago, I accepted a job with WestJet Airlines. I am now working within the Web Business team, focusing on the stats and analytics for WestJet.com and its family of sites. I will also be heading the search engine optimization for WestJet’s sites as well, as a secondary project. I am very excited about my new position, and what I can do for Canada’s top low-cost carrier.

As I am required to be in Calgary, Alberta most of the week, I am currently not accepting new clients through Lyndseo.  Should you have any questions about our services, or a simple question about SEO, please feel free to contact me.  When I begin taking on more contracts, I will be sure to advise you.

dmoz returning from the grave

After a few months of being in a complete coma-induced state, dmoz appears to be showing signs of life.

Now, it’s only the Editor’s Section that’s back online, but submissions should be soon to follow, right?  I don’t mind that the editors have some time for theirselves first.  Clear out some old crap, some of those submissions that have been sitting in the queue for probably close to year, maybe even more.  Or hey – wipe out existing pending submissions altogether and start with a clean slate.

But the question remains – what kind of credibility will dmoz even have after such a long absense?  Do webmasters and SEOs even bother attempting to submit anymore?  Everyone knows that dmoz can be a game of “who you know and how much you pay them”.  Will we see some changes in the ODP world?

Blog Tag – 5 Things About Lyndseo

Seven days ago, Jeff Puvler started the SEO Blog Tag game. Dazzlin’ Donna has tagged me, so here we go! Five things you didn’t know about me – Lyndsay Walker.

  1. I have a huge crush on Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts. The irony is that only 18 months ago, I didn’t even know what a “down” was, and now I’m a huge football fan.
  2. I HATE snow and cold. And yet I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba – also known as “Winterpeg“. What’s that? It’s -40? What else is new. I was born and raised in the Niagara Falls, Ontario area though – I sure miss their winter climate.
  3. I can solve the rubix cube in about 2 minutes or so.
  4. I listen to country music almost exclusively. George Strait, Gary Allen, Toby Keith. My second choice of music would be 80s hair rock – Metallica, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, etc.
  5. I’m a big Toronto Maple Leafs fan (ducks from all the flying objects being flung)

Sorry that’s not a more exciting list. If I think of something REALLY juicy… um… yeah right, you’ll be the first to know… hahaha

Okay now, who to tag??

Dustin Woodard (Web Connoisseur), Dan Thies, Rob Snell, Colin McDougal, and Kid Disco

You’re it!

Search Marketing Expo – June 2007

At SES Chicago, Danny announced that his new company, Third Door Media, would be having a search engine conference in June of 2007 – called Search Marketing Expo.

I was really stoked to hear about this until I saw the date – SES Toronto is the following week.  SES Toronto is my best bet at attending conferences in 2007 since it doesn’t require leaving the country, and airfare from Winnipeg to Toronto is fairly reasonable.  Plus I know so many people in that area, I’d probably bypass hotel accomodations for mooching off of family and friends.  I was excited to have my SE friends in my territory, in my home province.

June is still six months away, so there’s lots of time to find out more about Search Marketing Expo.

Six months.  Wow.  Maybe the snow will be gone by then.

What a Super Proposal!

So, I’m a football fan. Moreso of the Canadian Football League, but this year I’ve definately been getting into the NFL quite a bit more.

I’m reading about this guy, JP, who is trying to raise money to buy a 30 second ad during the SuperBowl to propose to his girlfriend. Now, let’s be fair here. JP is his alias – obviously, this is creating buzz and he doesn’t want his girlfriend to find out. Certainly JP could be just about anyone right?

Could it be my boyfriend? As I pondered the thought… outloud apparently… my friend Joe was quick to tell me that no, JP was not Canadian and the proposal was not for me. Drat.

But what a fantastic idea!! What girl wouldn’t melt at the thought of being proposed to on television – in front of millions of viewers for the low low cost of $2.5 million? Wow that better be a sweet ring for this kind of attention!

It gets better. The money that JP raises is going to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

To some it up, you’ve got a sweet, romantic kid with a huge heart. Any girl would be lucky to have such a guy.
